Teflon® and other manufacturer's coatings are often used for food contact applications and come in many varieties.  Under the brand name of Teflon® are PTFE, FEP, PFA and Teflon®-S coating systems which comply with FDA regulations under 21.CFR for food contact.  Each of these materials offer different functional characteristics.  Some are tough and wear well, while others offer a high operating temperature.  One may release high sugar content better, while another may release dough better.  Some function superior to others in hot greasy environments, etc.  There are one, two & three coat systems.  These all have different labor and material cost factors.

There are other dry lubricants that can be used in functional areas in the food processing industry such as on sprockets, bearings, chains, etc.  These are bonded fluorocarbons, graphite, molybdenum disulfide, tungsten disulfide, etc.  These can offer great advantage in service life and reduced maintenance costs.  These are a little different in formulation from the food contact materials and while the fully cured coating meets the applicable sections of the federal register for food handling equipment, most are not approved for food contact.
